Begin the Descent into the western slope Agate Creek drainage, then climb out the Lime Creek drainage and drop into the Indian Creek drainage. Sound complicated? Worry not, the way will be marked.
This is a change from the 2005 Vapor Trail, where the entire Agate Creek Trail was included, but then racers had to deal with crossing and then riding about a mile of US Highway 50 into the town of Sargents. This year, we'll traverse to the south before reaching the lower part of Agate Creek. We'll get over from Agate to the Marshall Pass Road, then spare you as much of the climb on that road. But don't worry, we'll get that back from you later.
The Marshall Pass Road was built by Otto Mears way back in 1879. The roadbed had a narrow-guage rail line later in the 1800's, which the Denver and Rio Grande was lucky enough to be able to quickly acquire from Otto Mears since he had built it in anticipation of their need. He sold the rights to this right-of-way to the railroad, which ran trains on it until 1953, then it became a dirt road again. And the course climbs over 2000 vertical feet to the final Aid Station at Marshall Pass. So the racer will get a chance to become acquainted with Mr. Mears' work.
